Emotion reaction towards air pollution:

Difference brought by culture background and previous experience

【RESEARCH OBJECTIVE】

Explore how students with varied culture background and air pollution experience differ in their PM2.5 concentrations-emotional response curve.

【EXPERIMENT APPARATUS】

  • BIOPAC physiological recorders.

  • stimulus presentation computers.

  • body signal recording PC.

  • Emotiv wireless EEG devices.

【RESEARCH DESIGN】

  • Participants:Graduate or undergraduate students in Duke-Kunshan University.

  • Research location:AB 3114 3116 3108, DukeKunshan University.

  • Experiment time:Nov. 19th- 23th, 2018.

【RESEARCH OUTLOOK】

  1. Repeat the experiment when students go back to university after vacation.

  2. Repeat the experiment in US when they study at Duke University in Durham.

RESEARCH LOCATION & TIME

  • AB 3114, 3116 and 3108 in Duke  Kunshan University.

  • Nov. 19th- 23rd, 2018. Students can scan the QR code  to register as participants. We have many time blocks available per day from 8:00am till 10:00pm. At most 3 participants can take experiment together. It takes about 40min for the whole experiment.

EXPERIMENT PROCEDURE

  1. Two physiological signals are recorded for each participant during the whole experiment: (SCR) Skin conductance response & EEG.

  2. 12 pictures taken at the same place with varied PM2.5concentrations background are presented randomly and in alternated with 12 climate change pictures between any two PM pictures. Participants are asked to rate on two emotional scales: valence & arousal.

  3. Pictures are displayed for 3s, and ratings are self-paced. The experiment has 8 blocks and 24 trials for each block. In total we have 8*24 = 192 trials for each participant.

Landscapes and mental status: A pilot study based on mobile EEG

【RESEARCH OBJECTIVE】

Take advantage of EMOTIV mobile EEG devices as well as BIOHARNESS portable ECG devices to explore the potential impact of different landscapes on mental health.

【EXPERIMENT APPARATUS】

  • EMOTIV wireless EEG devices.

  • BIOHARNESS ECG & Respiration recording devices.

  • MICRO PAM PM2.5 and O3 portable monitoring devices.

  • Kestrel 5500 mini weather stations.

【RESEARCH DESIGN】

  • Participants:The same group of students in EXP I.

  • Research location and experiment procedure: Two typical landscape types in or near Duke-Kunshan University. Proposed landscape types: Green space and traffic road. Rest-state EEG data will be recorded for each student for 10 min at each site. Meanwhile, ECG and respiratory signals will also be monitored during the whole experiment. Two kinds of pollutants: PM2.5 & O3 and several weather parameters such as wind speed, temperature and humidity etc. are monitored at each site, to examine any interaction or mediation effect caused by these factors.

  • Experiment time:Nov 22nd- 26th, 2018. Time schedule for each day will be released in the email.
